Bryan Gathright

Bryan Gathright has been a teaching professional since 1987, with more than 45 years of experience in the game. A Lifetime Member of GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America, Bryan has also been recognized among the top instructors in Texas by Golf Digest and Texas Monthly.

Throughout his career, Bryan has helped golfers at every level—from developing juniors and collegiate athletes to PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour winners. His approach is rooted in a simple belief: great coaching should build around the individual rather than force every golfer into the same swing.

Proven Success at the Professional Level

Bryan has coached seven players with no previous tour experience who went on to earn PGA TOUR membership:

  • Jimmy Walker — six-time PGA TOUR winner, 2016 PGA Championship winner, Ryder Cup team member, Presidents Cup team member, and Texas Golf Hall of Fame member

  • Notah Begay III — four-time PGA TOUR winner

  • Cameron Beckman — three-time PGA TOUR winner

  • Mac Meissner — PGA TOUR member, SMU All-American, and Walker Cup team member

  • Johnny Keefer — 2024 PGA TOUR Americas Player of the Year and 2025 Korn Ferry Tour Player and Rookie of the Year

Bryan has also coached five-time LPGA Tour winner and World Cup champion Dorothy Delasin, along with Korn Ferry Tour professional Mitchell Meissner.

Bryan’s influence extends far beyond the professional tours. More than 400 high school golfers coached by Bryan have gone on to compete at 92 four-year universities.

His junior and amateur coaching accomplishments include:

  • 11 individual Texas High School State Champions, including nine girls

  • Multiple Texas State Amateur and Texas State Open champions

  • Three pupils finishing first, second, and third at the 2018 Texas State Amateur

  • Four major amateur victories by Bryan’s students during a five-week span in 2020

  • Zach Heffernan becoming one of only three golfers in Texas history to win back-to-back Texas State Junior Championships

Bryan continues to coach collegiate players, rising professionals, and aspiring junior golfers who want to compete at the highest levels of the game.

Carrying Forward the Harvey Penick Legacy

Developing the Next Generation

In 1992, legendary instructor Harvey Penick personally selected Bryan to serve as the original Director of Instruction for his golf schools in Austin.

Bryan spent the following months working directly with Mr. Penick, learning how he evaluated players, communicated with students, and adapted his instruction to each golfer’s natural abilities. Together, they launched the first Harvey Penick Golf Academy.

That experience continues to shape Bryan’s teaching today. Instead of fitting golfers into a predetermined system, he identifies what each player does well, strengthens the fundamentals, and develops a practical plan for lasting improvement.

Teaching Philosophy

Bryan’s goal is to help every golfer play better, move better, and enjoy the game for a lifetime.

There is no single swing method that works for everyone—even among the world’s best players. While great golfers share certain fundamentals, every player has different strengths, limitations, goals, and movement patterns.

Bryan begins by evaluating the golfer’s skills and physical capabilities. From there, he develops a clear, straightforward game plan designed to:

  • Build upon the player’s natural strengths

  • Improve weaknesses without overcomplicating the swing

  • Create more efficient and repeatable movement

  • Reduce unnecessary stress on the body

  • Support long-term improvement and enjoyment of the game

The result is highly individualized instruction grounded in sound fundamentals—not a one-size-fits-all swing system.

Only 11 players have recorded a round of 59 during the history of what is now the Korn Ferry Tour. Bryan coached two of them: Notah Begay III in 1998 and Mac Meissner in 2023.
